As Odisha prepares to
celebrate its 91st Foundation Day on April 1, 2026, the title triumph of
Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League (HIL) earlier this year has
brought renewed attention to the state’s deep-rooted hockey tradition and its
continued contribution to the national sporting landscape. The Lancers emerged
champions in the league’s second season in January 2026, delivering a
remarkable campaign that underscored the strength of Odisha’s robust grassroots
ecosystem that consistently nurtures world-class talent.
Central to the team’s
success was a formidable Odia core featuring players such as Pratap Lakra,
Dipsan Tirkey, Rohit Kullu, Rosan Kujur, and Amit K. Toppo, all of whom
sharpened their skills on local grounds before rising to prominence on the national
stage. Their journey reflects the enduring strength of Odisha’s grassroots
framework, particularly in districts like Sundargarh and Rourkela, where hockey
is woven into the fabric of everyday life. Over the years, this well-structured
pipeline has produced a steady stream of players progressing into professional
leagues and the national setup, supported by sustained investment and
collaborative efforts with the state government to further strengthen the
sport’s foundation.
“Odisha’s relationship with hockey goes far
beyond the field, it is part of the state’s identity and community. The success
of the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers this season reflects the strength of that bond
and the talent that continues to emerge from the region. As we celebrate Odisha
Diwas, it is important for us to recognise and share this achievement with the
people who have been at the heart of this journey,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO,
Vedanta Aluminium.
“It is always a matter of great pride to see
young talent from Odisha stepping up and delivering on a stage like the Hockey
India League, and the success of the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers this season
reflects that strength. Hockey shares a deep and enduring connection with
Odisha, and it is encouraging to see that legacy continue through both the team
and the players coming through. On the occasion of Odisha Diwas, I extend my
warm wishes to the people of the state.” said Dilip Tirkey, President, Hockey
India.
The strong Odia
presence within the Lancers extended beyond the field, with Video Analyst
Abhijeet Hazary, Physiotherapist Bodhisattva Dass, and Masseur Sunil Kumar
Mohanty playing vital roles in the team’s high-performance environment. The
franchise also showcased Odisha’s rich cultural heritage through its
award-winning jersey design inspired by the iconic wheel of the Konark Sun
Temple and the flowing rivers of the state, presenting a powerful visual
representation of Odisha’s identity on a national stage.
The season’s success and the state’s enduring hockey legacy were further celebrated through a community event at the Vedanta Jharsuguda township, bringing together employees and local stakeholders as part of Utkal Divas (Odisha Day), reinforcing the shared pride associated with the state’s sporting achievements.
Vedanta Kalinga Lancers is a premier franchise in the Hockey India League, proudly representing the state of Odisha. Owned by Vedanta Limited, the team reflects the company’s commitment to promoting sports and nurturing young talent.
