Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and nature-positive
growth on the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day, Vedanta Group has
announced that it generated and utilised nearly 400 crore (4 billion) units of
clean energy during FY2025-26, marking another significant milestone in its
environmental, social and governance (ESG) journey. The company said its
sustainability initiatives have helped avoid a cumulative 3.6 crore tonnes of
carbon emissions since FY2020-21, an environmental impact equivalent to
removing nearly 80 lakh passenger vehicles from the roads for an entire year.
One of the world's leading conglomerates in metals, oil and
gas, critical minerals, power and technology, Vedanta continues to integrate
sustainability into its core business strategy by accelerating decarbonisation,
strengthening water stewardship, restoring ecosystems and conserving
biodiversity. These initiatives are aligned with India's climate goals while
reinforcing the company's long-term vision of responsible industrial growth.
As part of its clean energy transition, Vedanta recorded a
nearly 450 per cent increase in renewable energy consumption during FY2025-26
compared to FY2020-21. The company also reduced emissions intensity across its
metals and mining businesses by nearly 14 per cent, reflecting sustained
improvements in operational efficiency and energy management. Advancing towards
its ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier, Vedanta
continues to execute its four-pronged decarbonisation strategy focused on
enhancing operational efficiency, adopting cleaner fuels, increasing renewable
energy usage and investing in nature-based carbon sequestration initiatives.
Complementing its climate action agenda, Vedanta has
significantly expanded its water conservation efforts across operational
locations, recognising water security as a key pillar of ecosystem resilience.
The company has developed more than 100 water conservation structures,
including rainwater harvesting systems, check dams and settling ponds, while
also undertaking aquifer recharge, pond rejuvenation and watershed restoration projects.
During FY2025-26, Vedanta recycled and reused over 8.5 crore cubic metres of
water, enough to meet the annual domestic water requirements of nearly 50 lakh
Indian households, while achieving nearly 40 per cent water recycling across
its operations.
Vedanta has also intensified its focus on ecosystem
restoration through large-scale afforestation programmes. Since 2021, the
company has planted more than 40 lakh trees across its business locations. As
one of the first South Asian corporates to join the World Economic Forum's
1t.org global movement, Vedanta is contributing to the worldwide mission of
conserving, restoring and growing one trillion trees. Across several sites, the
company has adopted the Miyawaki afforestation model, using native species to
create dense, self-sustaining forests that promote faster ecological recovery
and improve biodiversity.
Further strengthening its environmental stewardship, Vedanta is implementing science-based biodiversity conservation programmes across its operations. Biodiversity assessments have enabled the development of location-specific Biodiversity Management Plans aligned with the company's No Net Loss and Net Positive Impact roadmap. These initiatives encompass habitat enhancement, wetland restoration, mangrove conservation, elephant corridor protection, invasive species management and long-term ecological monitoring supported by GIS mapping, independent assessments and active community participation.
Reaffirming its commitment on World Nature Conservation Day, Vedanta said sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship must progress together. By embedding clean energy adoption, responsible water management, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation into its business strategy, the company continues to strengthen ecological resilience while advancing its purpose of 'Transforming for Good' and contributing to a more sustainable future for India.
