Marking World
Environment Day with a strong commitment to ecological sustainability, Vedanta
Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has launched a month-long
plantation drive across Kalahandi, Rayagada and Koraput districts, with a
target of planting more than 5,000 fruit-bearing saplings.
The initiative builds
on the company’s extensive afforestation efforts in the region, where over 1.2
lakh trees have already been planted in collaboration with local communities.
The latest campaign began with the plantation of more than 1,500 saplings
across government institutions, including schools, primary health centres,
hostels and Anganwadi centres, aimed at enhancing green cover in public spaces
and promoting environmental awareness.
Focusing on
fruit-bearing and native tree species, the drive is designed to deliver
multiple environmental and socio-economic benefits, including improved soil
moisture retention, erosion control, increased biodiversity and additional
livelihood opportunities for rural households. By actively involving local
communities, the initiative seeks to ensure the long-term survival of the
saplings while fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards green
assets.
Sharing his
experience, Samru Majhi of Dongijhula village said, “The plantation drive is
helping improve our surroundings and soil conditions, which supports our
farming. The fruit-bearing trees will also benefit our families in the long
run. It is a meaningful step for both the environment and our livelihoods.”
Through such
initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium continues to strengthen its commitment to
environmental conservation and sustainable community development across its
operational regions. The company’s focus on afforestation, rural livelihoods
and ecological stewardship reflects its broader vision of fostering inclusive
growth while contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
