Mahindra &
Mahindra, the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume, on Monday
announced the commencement of commercial production and supply of MaxSeeder, a
precision zero-till, multi-crop seeding machine developed under licence from
Canada's Clean Seed Technologies, as the company steps up its focus on
sustainable farm mechanisation.
Manufactured at
Mahindra's exclusive farm machinery plant in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, the
machine is designed to help farmers sow multiple crops, including rice, wheat,
soybean, maize and cotton, while reducing cultivation costs, conserving water
and minimising environmental damage caused by stubble burning.
The MaxSeeder enables
direct sowing into paddy residue without conventional tillage, offering a
potential alternative to stubble burning, particularly in the northern states
of Punjab and Haryana, where crop residue management remains a major
agricultural challenge.
Field trials
conducted in the two states demonstrated the machine's ability to sow seeds
efficiently through heavy paddy residue with minimal soil disturbance, while
reducing input consumption.
The product will
initially be rolled out through Mahindra Farm Equipment Business dealerships in
Punjab and Haryana, followed by a phased expansion across India to cater to
diverse farming requirements.
"Mahindra is
proud to partner with Clean Seed to deliver sustainable mechanisation solutions
to farmers world over," Veejay Nakra, President, Farm Equipment Business,
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said.
He said the
collaboration combines Clean Seed's patented precision seeding technology with
Mahindra's manufacturing capabilities to deliver solutions that benefit both
farmers and the environment.
The partnership also
reflects a shared commitment to improving access to modern farm machinery in
India and international markets, while showcasing Indian manufacturing
capabilities globally, Nakra added.
The MaxSeeder is a
tractor-trailed machine engineered to operate with tractors of 35 horsepower
(HP) and above, potentially making precision seeding technology accessible to
farmers who may not have higher-horsepower tractors.
Designed for multiple
crop patterns, the machine features five independent planting row units,
adjustable row spacing, multiple metering configurations and flexible product
delivery systems. These features allow farmers to customise sowing operations
according to crop requirements and field conditions.
An electronic control
unit (ECU) precisely meters and dispenses seeds, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and
urea according to field requirements. The system can also be controlled through
a mobile application.
Its multifunctional
tyne places urea approximately 1.5 inches below the seed line, helping improve
nutrient availability and reduce fertiliser wastage. The precision application
system is aimed at enhancing input-use efficiency and supporting better crop
establishment.
The zero-till
technology also reduces the need for repeated field preparation, potentially
saving fuel, labour and time while enabling farmers to make better use of
critical sowing windows. The machine's operating capabilities are designed to
improve field productivity and reduce overall cultivation costs.
Graeme Lempriere,
Chairman and CEO of Clean Seed Capital Group, described the commencement of
production at Mahindra as a significant milestone in the development of
sustainable seeding solutions.
He said the collaboration reflected years of innovation and cooperation, adding that Mahindra's manufacturing scale and capabilities would support the company's vision of making advanced seeding technology available to farmers in India and across global markets.
With precision input placement, multi-crop adaptability and reduced soil disturbance, the MaxSeeder is positioned as a mechanisation solution aimed at improving farm productivity and profitability while supporting more environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
