Mahanadi Coalfields
Limited (MCL) has intensified its efforts to strengthen e-waste management and
workplace cleanliness across its headquarters and operational areas under
Special Campaign 6, with 73 sites cleaned and 350 heavy earth-moving machinery
(HEMM) batteries disposed of in the first week of the implementation phase.
The campaign, being
observed until October 31, aims to promote systematic waste collection,
environmental awareness and cleanliness across MCL establishments, while
encouraging the responsible disposal and recycling of discarded electronic
items.
As part of the
initiative, e-waste collection kiosks have been established across MCL's
operational areas to facilitate the collection of obsolete electronic equipment
and ensure its disposal through authorised recycling channels. Employees at the
headquarters and field establishments are actively participating in the drive,
contributing to improved workplace hygiene and the adoption of environmentally
sustainable practices.
During the first week
of implementation, the company cleaned 73 of the 240 identified sites, covering
an area of 3,06,663 square feet against the targeted 10 lakh square feet. The
campaign also aims to facilitate the disposal of 600 metric tonnes of scrap,
while the disposal of 350 HEMM batteries has generated revenue through scrap
management.
Alongside on-ground cleanliness activities, MCL is conducting awareness programmes to sensitise employees and nearby communities about the environmental and health hazards associated with improper e-waste disposal. Discarded electronic items, when handled irresponsibly, can contribute to soil and water contamination and pose risks to human health and the ecosystem.
The initiative underscores the importance of scientific waste management, resource recovery and responsible recycling in reducing the environmental footprint of industrial operations.
