Odisha Chief Minister
Mohan Charan Majhi has announced the construction of an additional 2,91,666 houses
under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, extending the scheme’s implementation period
by two years until 2029, while keeping its total financial outlay unchanged at
Rs 7,550 crore.
Under the revised
plan, Rs 3,500 crore earmarked for house repairs will be diverted towards the
construction of new houses, reflecting the state government’s decision to
prioritise expanding housing coverage among eligible families.
Majhi said the move
would help the government achieve its objective of providing permanent housing
to all eligible households at the earliest.
The state government
has directed the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department to conduct a
survey at the earliest to identify additional beneficiaries. Applicants who
have received Rs 48,500 or less, along with other eligible households, will be
considered for inclusion under the scheme, according to the decision.
The government has
also revised the incentive structure to encourage beneficiaries to complete
house construction within the stipulated period.
Under the revised
norms, beneficiaries completing their houses within five months will receive an
incentive of Rs 35,000, compared with the earlier Rs 20,000 for completion
within four months. Similarly, those completing construction within seven
months will be eligible for an incentive of Rs 20,000, against the earlier Rs
10,000 for completion within six months.
The revised timelines
and incentives are aimed at encouraging timely construction while facilitating
wider participation in the housing programme.
The Antyodaya Gruha Yojana was launched with a target of providing houses to five lakh families, particularly poor and vulnerable households that were not eligible for housing assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
The latest expansion is expected to bring more eligible families within the ambit of the state’s housing programme, with the additional construction target and extended implementation period providing a longer window to address housing needs.
