Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday urged members to ensure a productive, constructive and purposeful 271st Session of the House, calling on them to uphold its dignity, discipline and decorum while avoiding disruptions that impede legislative business.

Making his opening remarks at the commencement of the session, the Chairman welcomed the newly elected members and expressed confidence that the Upper House would continue its proud tradition of meaningful deliberations. He noted that the House has 19 sittings scheduled during the session and said it is the collective responsibility of all members to make effective use of the available time to debate and decide on issues of national importance.

Announcing a major technological initiative, Radhakrishnan informed the House that the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has introduced live AI-based simultaneous interpretation of proceedings in nine languages through multimedia devices installed at members' seats. He said the facility would be gradually expanded to cover all 22 scheduled languages and requested members to provide feedback for its further improvement.

Referring to the session's legislative and deliberative agenda, the Chairman urged members to remain focused on the timely disposal of business, saying every disruption delays discussions on issues affecting the nation and the people they represent.

Emphasising the importance of parliamentary conduct, Radhakrishnan said differences of opinion are integral to parliamentary democracy but should be expressed in a manner that preserves the sanctity of the House. He appealed to members across party lines to ensure that disruptions do not undermine the functioning of the institution and wished the House a productive and purposeful session.
