Syniverse-powered
interoperability marks a major step toward seamless cross-border 5G
connectivity

T-Mobile and Jio have
achieved a major milestone in the evolution of global wireless connectivity,
completing what the companies describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA)
roaming connection.
The breakthrough,
enabled through interoperability with Syniverse, marks a significant step
toward making next-generation 5G services work seamlessly across international
borders.
The achievement
allows T-Mobile customers traveling internationally to experience 5G Standalone
roaming, a technology designed to deliver faster speeds, lower latency and more
consistent connectivity. The companies say the development could help unlock
new applications across Internet of Things (IoT), real-time communications,
immersive technologies and enterprise services.
Unlike 5G networks
that rely partly on existing 4G infrastructure, 5G SA uses a dedicated 5G core
network, allowing operators to take greater advantage of capabilities such as
network slicing, low latency and advanced service management.
The cross-border
milestone was made possible through Syniverse’s connectivity platform, which
provides secure interconnection and mediation between mobile networks. The
company said its technology is designed to help operators validate, deploy and
scale 5G SA roaming services.
“This is a monumental step for global
wireless, and T-Mobile is proud to lead it,” said Ankur Kapoor, Chief Network
Officer at T-Mobile. He noted that T-Mobile began laying the groundwork for its
5G Standalone strategy in 2020 and described the collaboration with Jio as
another step in extending that technology internationally.
Kapoor said the goal
is to enable customers to move between countries while maintaining a consistent
5G experience for activities ranging from streaming and social media to
business applications.
For Jio, the
achievement represents more than an advancement in international roaming. Mark
Yarkosky, Head of International Network, Partnership and Services at Jio, said
interoperability between two 5G SA networks could create opportunities for new
consumer and enterprise services.
“This is a transformational milestone and far
more than just roaming,” Yarkosky said, highlighting potential applications
involving differentiated services and AI-enabled capabilities.
The development comes
as telecommunications operators worldwide continue working toward greater
interoperability among standalone 5G networks.
Syniverse Chief
Product Officer John Wick said the achievement demonstrates how secure network
interworking and advanced mediation technologies can help make 5G SA roaming
commercially viable.
The company said its
platform, together with its SEPP capabilities, can support operators through
the testing, validation and production stages as more networks adopt 5G SA
roaming.
The T-Mobile-Jio collaboration therefore represents not only a technical milestone but also a potential foundation for broader international 5G services. As more operators deploy standalone 5G infrastructure, interoperability could become increasingly important for delivering consistent connectivity to consumers and businesses across borders.
For T-Mobile, the milestone reinforces its push to extend the capabilities of its 5G network beyond national boundaries, while Jio’s participation highlights the growing role of India in the global 5G ecosystem.
