WASHINGTON,
JANUARY 26, 2026
As India marked its 77th Republic Day,
messages of goodwill from the United States underscored the enduring strategic
and economic relevance of one of the world’s most consequential partnerships,
even as trade frictions and tariff-related concerns continue to test bilateral
ties.
U.S. President Donald Trump, extending
greetings to India on behalf of the American people, highlighted the shared
democratic legacy of the two nations, describing them as the world’s oldest and
largest democracies. The message, circulated by the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi,
carried symbolic weight at a time when global supply chains, geopolitical
alignments, and market access debates are reshaping international commerce.
While differences persist on trade policies, the emphasis on democratic values
signaled Washington’s intent to keep engagement with New Delhi on a steady and
forward-looking course.
Adding a strong business and strategic
dimension to the occasion, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to the
expanding scope of cooperation between the two countries. He noted that
collaboration now spans defense manufacturing, energy security, critical
minerals, and cutting-edge technologies, sectors that are increasingly central
to global investment flows and industrial competitiveness. Rubio also
emphasized the role of the Quad framework in reinforcing stability and economic
opportunity across the Indo-Pacific, a region vital to future growth.
Further reinforcing these ties, U.S.
Ambassador to India Sergio Gor attended the Republic Day celebrations at
Kartavya Path, calling the event a powerful expression of India’s
constitutional values and democratic vitality. His remarks on U.S.-made
aircraft participating in the parade highlighted the deepening
defense-industrial partnership, which has become a cornerstone of bilateral
trade and technology transfer.
