Odisha’s Kalahandi district, once associated with poverty and inadequate access to essential services, has witnessed a steady transformation in the reach of healthcare facilities across rural communities. At the centre of this change is the Maa Santoshi Jankalyan (MSJK) Hospital, which has emerged as a crucial healthcare support centre for people living in the remote pockets of Lanjigarh and nearby areas.

For years, families in this region had to travel long distances even for basic medical treatment. Delayed healthcare often aggravated health conditions, particularly for pregnant women, children, the elderly, and people suffering from diseases prevalent in the region, such as malaria and filaria.

MSJK Hospital was established in 2000 to serve nearly 8,000 people across 70 villages under four Gram Panchayats. Its reach expanded significantly after Vedanta Limited partnered with the hospital in 2014. With the company’s support, MSJK Hospital now caters to 120 villages across 12 Gram Panchayats, benefiting nearly 20,654 people annually. The hospital has substantially improved access to quality healthcare in one of Odisha’s remotest regions by providing essential treatment and timely medical support to communities that earlier had limited healthcare access. Located around 25 km from Lanjigarh, it continues to serve as a key healthcare centre for the Bankakundru region and adjoining areas.

The impact extends far beyond numbers. Pregnant women, who earlier faced severe risks due to inadequate maternal healthcare, now have access to specialised medical attention at the hospital. Children are receiving regular vaccinations and routine health check-ups, while patients suffering from malaria, diarrhoea, sickle cell anaemia and other illnesses can now access treatment much closer to their homes.

“Earlier, it was extremely difficult for us to access medical care, and many people had to depend on traditional remedies or unregistered practitioners in the hope of recovering from illnesses. MSJK Hospital has been a true blessing for the region and helps keep us healthy and secure,” said Bharat Majhi, a resident of Lanjigarh.

Healthcare access has also expanded beyond the hospital premises. Through Vedanta’s Mobile Health Units, doctors and nurses are reaching remote villages more effectively, enabling early detection of illnesses and reducing the need for emergency hospitalisation. This has allowed many families to receive timely medical care within their own communities, eliminating the hardship of travelling long distances.

Emergency healthcare services have also improved with ambulance support, ensuring quicker medical intervention during critical situations. Vedanta-supported initiatives linked to maternal and community healthcare have also received recognition under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matrutva Abhiyan, highlighting the importance of such interventions in strengthening rural healthcare delivery.

Today, MSJK Hospital stands as a vital healthcare institution for rural Lanjigarh. From a modest facility serving a limited population, it has evolved into a dependable healthcare support system for thousands across the region with extensive support from Vedanta. The transformation reflects how sustained partnerships and focused interventions can significantly strengthen healthcare access in underserved communities.
