In the heart of
Odisha’s tribal hinterland, a quiet sporting revolution is taking shape as
young archers from Kalahandi are transforming raw talent into national-level
promise through Vedanta Aluminium’s grassroots sports initiative.
Archery, deeply woven
into the cultural fabric of Odisha’s rural and tribal communities through
generations of hunting and gathering traditions, is now emerging as a powerful
avenue for aspiration, discipline, and opportunity. In Kalahandi, a district
once associated with remoteness and limited prospects, the sport is steadily
creating pathways for youth to dream beyond boundaries.
At the forefront of
this transformation is Vedanta Aluminium’s Grassroots Sports Initiative, aimed
at developing Kalahandi into a hub for sporting excellence. Through structured
coaching, professional-grade equipment, nutritional support, and assistance for
competitions across districts and states, the initiative is nurturing a
sustainable sporting ecosystem while opening new doors for young athletes.
Seventeen-year-old
Rachana Majhi from Chanalima village is among the rising faces of this
movement. Once balancing school and farm work with little exposure to
professional sport, her life changed after being introduced to archery through
Vedanta’s outreach efforts.
“When I first saw the bow at 13, I didn’t
think I could do this,” she recalls. “Now, I feel confident stepping onto a
field and competing with others.”
Her journey from a
village trainee to a state medalist and national squad participant reflects the
larger success story unfolding across Kalahandi. At present, nearly 80 youth
are undergoing extensive training in archery and athletics under the programme.
During FY’26 alone, nine athletes competed at the national level, 60
participated in state-level tournaments, and 73 took part in district and zonal
competitions. The athletes collectively secured three national medals and 94
state medals, underlining the programme’s growing impact.
A key strength of the
initiative lies in the world-class mentorship being extended to these budding
sportspersons. Olympian archers Rahul Banerjee and Dola Banerjee are lending
technical expertise and global exposure to the programme, helping bridge the
gap between grassroots talent and professional excellence.
Coach Simanchal
Kadraka, himself a national-level archer, highlighted the significance of
structured guidance in shaping the athletes’ futures. “Earlier, the children
had interest but no direction. Now, they have access to proper coaching and
exposure. You can see the confidence in how they train and compete.”
Echoing similar
sentiments, coach Shambhu Nath Parida said, “All these students come from very
remote backgrounds. When they travel outside the district for competitions, it
opens up a completely new world for them.”
Beyond medals and
tournaments, the initiative is creating deeper social impact by building
confidence, identity, and aspiration among tribal youth. For many participants,
sport has become a channel for self-belief and mobility.
Lina Majhi from
Karlapada in Bhawanipatna described the personal transformation she experienced
through the programme. “Earlier, I used to feel nervous even speaking in front
of others. Now I represent my district. My family feels proud.”
Her father,
Brahmanand Majhi, expressed pride in the opportunities now available to
children from remote villages. “We didn’t know our children had this kind of
talent. With the right training, they are going far and making a name for our
village.”
The initiative has
also significantly strengthened gender inclusion in sports, with nearly half
the participants being girls who are now competing confidently at state and
national platforms, challenging long-standing social barriers.
The growing success
of the programme is receiving institutional recognition as well. In FY’26, four
students associated with the initiative were felicitated by the Kalahandi
district administration for their sporting achievements, reflecting the broader
momentum building around grassroots sports development in the region.
As young archers from
Kalahandi continue to qualify for inter-state competitions and bring laurels to
Odisha, Vedanta Aluminium’s sports initiative is steadily demonstrating how
corporate social responsibility, when aligned with community aspirations, can
create lasting change far beyond the playing field.
