In
a landmark celebration of India’s textile heritage with a contemporary global
appeal, the ‘Vishwa Sutra – Weaves of India for the World’ collection was
unveiled at the 61st edition of Femina Miss India in Bhubaneswar. The
initiative, jointly presented by the Office of the Development Commissioner
(Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles and the National Institute of
Fashion Technology (NIFT), marked a first-of-its-kind effort to position Indian
handlooms within a modern, globally resonant design narrative.
Bringing
together 30 distinct handloom traditions — each representing a different Indian
state — the collection reimagines these weaves through creative inspirations
drawn from 30 countries. The result is a striking fusion of heritage and global
aesthetics, where Indian craftsmanship meets international silhouettes and
cultural motifs.
From
Odisha’s iconic Ikat paired with classical Greek forms to Kanchipuram silks
interpreted through minimalist Norwegian lines, and from Assam’s Muga silk
infused with Egyptian elements to Gujarat’s Patola reflecting Spanish
influences, the collection presented a bold and refreshing perspective.
Banarasi weaves, re-envisioned with UAE-inspired ensembles, further underscored
the versatility and global adaptability of India’s textile legacy.
Speaking
on the occasion, Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena highlighted
the sector’s vital role in preserving India’s cultural identity while
supporting millions of livelihoods, particularly empowering women artisans. She
reiterated the Prime Minister’s “Gaon to Global” vision, emphasizing the need
to bridge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary market demands and
international design sensibilities.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader push under the “Vocal for Local to Global” campaign and the 5F framework — Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign — aimed at transforming traditional sectors into globally competitive industries.
By placing Indian handlooms on an international fashion platform, ‘Vishwa Sutra’ not only celebrates centuries-old craftsmanship but also signals a forward-looking strategy — one that blends heritage with innovation to elevate India’s standing in the global textile and fashion ecosystem.
