In
a major breakthrough for healthcare in Odisha, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has
successfully carried out its first deceased donor liver transplant, coinciding
with Worldorld Liver Day and sending a powerful message on the life-saving
potential of organ donation.
At
the heart of this remarkable milestone is Dr. Radha Parhi, whose selfless act
continues to inspire. Battling a long-standing platelet disorder, she had
pledged her organs during her lifetime. Following her declaration of brain stem
death on April 2, 2026, her family honoured her wish, turning their moment of
grief into a gift of life.
On
April 3, her liver was successfully transplanted into a 46-year-old patient by
the Surgical Gastroenterology team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The recipient is
recovering well and is likely to be discharged soon, underscoring the success
of the complex procedure.
The
transplant was led by Dr. Bramhadatta Pattnaik, with mentorship from Prof. Viniyendra
Pamecha of Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. A multidisciplinary team
spanning anaesthesia, gastroenterology, and critical care ensured seamless
coordination and patient care.
AIIMS
Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas lauded the donor’s family
for their courage and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to advancing organ
donation awareness. In a moving tribute, Dr. Parhi was accorded a Guard of
Honour at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, led by Medical Superintendent Dr. Prabhas Ranjan
Tripathy.
This landmark achievement not only reflects growing medical excellence in the region but also reinforces a vital message: organ donation can transform tragedy into hope. Dr. Parhi’s legacy stands as a beacon, urging more people to embrace this noble cause and help save lives.
