In a decisive move reflecting Odisha’s
commitment to harmonising environmental conservation with developmental
priorities, the Standing Committee of the State Board for Wildlife has
recommended six crucial irrigation and drinking water projects for further
approval.
The 12th meeting of the committee was
held on Friday at the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department’s
conference hall in Kharvel Bhawan under the chairmanship of Ganesh Ram
Singkhuntia, Minister for Forest, Environment & Climate Change and Labour
& Employees State Insurance. Functioning under the mandate of Wildlife
(Protection) (Amendment) Act, 2022, the committee is tasked with ensuring that
development initiatives are evaluated with both ecological sensitivity and
technical precision.
During the meeting, six proposals were
taken up for review, including three major irrigation projects in the districts
of Angul and Mayurbhanj. These projects aim to provide assured irrigation to
agricultural regions, strengthening rural livelihoods and driving
socio-economic growth by improving water security for farmers.
The committee also examined three
drinking water supply projects focused on remote and ecologically sensitive
zones within Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary, Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary and
Chandaka Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, along with adjoining villages. These
initiatives are expected to significantly enhance access to safe drinking water
in underserved areas while maintaining ecological balance.
After detailed deliberations, the
committee recommended all six proposals for approval by the Chairman of the
State Board for Wildlife, the Chief Minister of Odisha. Upon receiving
clearance, the proposals will be forwarded to the National Board for Wildlife
for final consideration.
The meeting saw participation from key
stakeholders including Bhatli MLA Irasis Acharya, Principal Secretary Bhaskar
Jyoti Sharma, PCCF and Head of Forest Force Dr. K. Murugesan, and PCCF
(Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Prem Kumar Jha, along with other members
of the committee, underscoring a collaborative push towards sustainable
development in the state.
