In a significant development for Odisha’s infrastructure ambitions, the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri has received in-principle (Stage-I) forest clearance from the Central Government, bringing the long-envisioned project closer to reality.

Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has approved the diversion of 27.887 hectares of DLC forest land located under the Puri Forest Division, enabling the state government to move forward with preparatory steps for the airport’s development. The decision was taken after a detailed review of the proposal under the provisions of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, along with recommendations made by the Centre’s Advisory Committee.

The conditional approval represents a crucial milestone for the ambitious aviation project, which has been under discussion for several years as part of efforts to strengthen Odisha’s connectivity infrastructure. Before final clearance is granted, the state government will be required to meet specific compliance requirements stipulated by the Centre.

Once operational, the greenfield airport is expected to transform connectivity to Puri, one of India’s most prominent spiritual destinations, while catalysing tourism, trade, hospitality and allied sectors. Improved air access is likely to accelerate regional economic activity, create employment opportunities and enhance the state’s appeal as an investment destination.

With the initial clearance now secured, officials indicate that timely fulfilment of the prescribed conditions will be critical to obtaining Stage-II approval and commencing construction work, paving the way for a major infrastructure addition aligned with Odisha’s long-term growth strategy.
