What began as a childhood shaped by loss and uncertainty has blossomed into an inspiring tale of resilience, passion and artistic excellence. Archana and Chetana, twin sisters from Bengaluru, today stand tall as acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancers and cultural ambassadors of India, winning hearts across the country and beyond with a journey that traces its roots to SOS Children’s Villages India.

At just three years old, the twins faced a life-altering tragedy with the loss of their mother. Their father, overwhelmed by the responsibility of raising two toddlers alone, sought support from SOS Children’s Villages India. Soon, Archana and Chetana found a nurturing home at SOS Children’s Village Bengaluru, under the care of an SOS Mother whose guidance would quietly but profoundly shape their destiny.

Recognising their all-round potential at an early age, SOS Children’s Villages India ensured that the twins received not only quality education but also opportunities to explore their artistic inclinations. Alongside formal schooling, they were enrolled in Bharatanatyam classes, a decision that would eventually define their life’s purpose. “We ensured that Archana and Chetana grew up in a secure, nurturing family environment that prioritised education, values and emotional well-being,” said Sumanta Kar, CEO, SOS Children’s Villages India, reflecting on the organisation’s role in their formative years.

With unwavering institutional support, both sisters went on to complete their bachelor’s degrees in engineering and began promising careers in the corporate sector. Yet, the rhythm of dance, nurtured since childhood, continued to call out to them. Taking a courageous leap of faith, Archana and Chetana chose to leave their corporate jobs and pursue Bharatanatyam professionally, a decision wholeheartedly supported by SOS Children’s Villages India.

Their dedication and artistry soon earned them national and international recognition. From a critically acclaimed Arangetram in 2004 to empanelment as artistes of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the twins steadily carved a niche for themselves. Their accolades include the Natya Mayuri Award from Chennai, the US Krishna Rao and Chandra Bhagadevi Endowment Award from Karnataka, the Akka Award from Chicago, the Rotary Nachaley Award in 2017, and recognition as graded artistes of Doordarshan. Today, they proudly serve as Cultural Ambassadors of India, representing the country’s rich classical heritage on global platforms.

Driven by gratitude and a desire to give back, Archana and Chetana founded the Nrithyarpanam School of Dance, nurturing young talent and passing on the art that transformed their own lives. “Dance helped us cope with losing our mother, being away from our father and adapting to a new life,” said Archana. “If we can change even one life for the better through dance, our journey would feel complete.”

Echoing her sister’s sentiments, Chetana recalled the pivotal role of their SOS Mother in introducing them to dance during their most vulnerable years. What began as a coping mechanism soon became the highlight of their days and a lifelong calling. As the eldest children in their SOS family, the twins also grew into natural leaders, imbibing values of responsibility, care and togetherness that continue to guide their personal and professional lives.

Archana and Chetana’s journey stands as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of family-like care, holistic education and sustained emotional support. Their story not only celebrates artistic excellence but also reflects the enduring mission of SOS Children’s Villages India in enabling children to rise above adversity and truly thrive.
