Emphasising the need
for greater awareness, early detection and affordable treatment to prevent
cancer, Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati said that cancer is no longer
merely a health issue but has emerged as a major social challenge affecting
families and communities.
Addressing the
“Cancer-Free Odisha” awareness conference and the “Mahanayak–2026” award
ceremony organised by Asim Odisha Foundation Trust on Monday as the Chief
Guest, the Governor highlighted that the rising number of cancer cases in
Odisha as well as in many parts of the country is largely attributed to lifestyle
changes, tobacco consumption, environmental factors, lack of awareness and
delayed diagnosis.
Stressing the
importance of prevention, the Governor said that cancer incidence can be
significantly reduced by creating awareness about risk factors such as tobacco
use, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. He remarked that an aware society
is a strong society and that prevention is often more effective than treatment.
Highlighting the
urgent need for early detection, Dr. Kambhampati underscored the importance of strengthening the primary healthcare
system and expanding screening programmes, particularly in rural and
underserved areas. Early diagnosis not only increases survival chances but also
reduces the financial and psychological burden on patients and their families,
he noted.
On the occasion, he
also emphasised that quality healthcare should be accessible and affordable for
all. Describing healthcare as a fundamental right, he called for bridging the
gap between urban and rural healthcare services and strengthening collaboration
among the government, private sector and civil society.
Congratulating the
recipients of the “Mahanayak–2026” awards, the Governor appreciated their
contributions to society and called for collective efforts to build a
cancer-aware and cancer-free Odisha.
On the occasion,
Akash Das Nayak, MLA from Korei, and former Balasore MP Rabindra Kumar Jena
also addressed the gathering. Chairperson and Managing Trustee of the
Foundation Asima Das delivered the welcome address, while former Bhubaneswar
North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra proposed the vote of thanks.
