BHUBANESWAR, MARCH 2, 2026

In a landmark decision steeped in faith and history, the revered Ratna Bhandar of the Shree Jagannath Temple will undergo a comprehensive inventory process beginning March 25, 2026, marking the first such detailed audit of its inner chambers since 1978. The announcement was made by Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), following a crucial meeting of the Temple Management Committee held in the presence of Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb.

The sacred exercise, traditionally known as ‘Ganati Manati’, is set to unfold under a meticulously prepared 14-page Standard Operating Procedure recently approved by the Odisha Government. Designed to uphold both administrative precision and spiritual sanctity, the inventory will be conducted in three carefully planned phases. The process will commence with the active treasury, proceed to the outer chamber, and culminate with the inner Ratna Bhandar — the sanctum that safeguards the most ancient and rarely glimpsed ornaments of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

For millions of devotees across the globe, the Ratna Bhandar is far more than a treasury; it embodies centuries of devotion, royal patronage, and unwavering faith. The last detailed record compiled in 1978 documented more than 128 kilograms of gold and 221 kilograms of silver among the divine assets. The upcoming inventory seeks to cross-verify these historic records with the present holdings, reinforcing transparency while preserving tradition.

To ensure that the process remains credible and respectful of sacred customs, a specialized team has been constituted comprising temple servitors, representatives from the Reserve Bank of India, and expert gemologists and goldsmiths drawn from public sector banks. This rare collaboration of spiritual custodians and financial experts reflects the delicate balance between reverence and responsibility.

Dr. Padhee has assured devotees that the daily rituals of the deities will continue uninterrupted throughout the inventory period. Devotees will still be able to have darshan of the Trinity from behind the outer wooden barricades, ensuring that spiritual access remains intact even as administrative procedures are carried out within.

Blending age-old tradition with modern safeguards, the Temple Administration plans to employ digital documentation and videography to create a permanent archival record of the Lord’s treasury.
