A five-day meeting of the Experts Advisory Committee (EAC) aimed at strengthening technical and higher education in Indian languages began at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) on Monday. The national-level programme has been organised by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology under the Ministry of Education.

The meeting, being held from May 18 to 22, is focused on developing and refining the Fundamental Glossary of Electronics and Political Science in English, Hindi and Odia. The key objective is to simplify technical terminology, improve accuracy and make it more practical and accessible in regional languages, particularly Odia.

Deliberations during the workshop are also centred on promoting the use of the mother tongue in higher and technical education in line with the vision of the Ministry of Education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As part of the initiative, standardised Odia terminology is being developed for nearly 2,833 technical terms in Electronics and around 4,000 terms in Political Science. The organisers have set a target of translating and standardising 700 to 900 technical terms every day during the workshop.

Language experts, academicians, researchers and subject specialists from institutions including Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, International Institute of Information Technology Bhubaneswar, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences and Odisha University of Technology and Research are participating in the meeting.

Addressing the inaugural session, KIIT Vice President Dr. Ajay Pradhan, KIIT Vice Chancellor Prof. Saranjit Singh and Registrar Prof. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty underlined the importance of imparting technical education in the mother tongue and stressed the need for accessible academic resources in Indian languages.

Prof. Benu Gopal Mohapatra, Professor and Director (CS), KIIT, is serving as the Chief Coordinator of the meeting. Prof. Sudhakar Sahu is coordinating the Electronics section, while Dr. Rudra Narayan Mohanty is coordinating the Political Science section.

CSTT Assistant Directors J. S. Rawat and Dr. S. A. Ansari from New Delhi are participating in the workshop and guiding discussions on terminology development. Deputy Director of the Ministry of Defence’s DGQA, New Delhi, Dipak Kumar Mishra, also attended the inaugural session.
