In a significant initiative to promote legal literacy, protect women's rights and strengthen access to justice among vulnerable sections of society, the Legal Services Clinic of KIIT School of Law organised a Legal Awareness Camp at Mamata Short Stay Home, Bidanasi, Bandhagada, Cuttack. The programme aimed at empowering destitute, distressed and homeless women by familiarising them with their legal rights, statutory safeguards and various government welfare schemes designed to ensure their safety, dignity, rehabilitation and overall empowerment.

Mamata Short Stay Home provides shelter, care and support to women belonging to different age groups who are confronted with challenging social, personal and economic circumstances. Recognising the importance of legal awareness in safeguarding the rights and interests of such vulnerable women, the camp focused on educating the residents about the legal provisions and institutional mechanisms available to protect them from exploitation, discrimination and violence.

As part of the initiative, student volunteers of the Legal Services Clinic interacted with the residents and sensitised them about important legal provisions relating to women's rights, legal remedies available in cases of exploitation and violence, and various government welfare initiatives. The volunteers also explained the avenues through which women can seek legal assistance, access institutional support and avail themselves of the benefits of relevant welfare schemes. The interactive session provided an opportunity for the residents to openly share their concerns, seek clarification on legal issues and gain a better understanding of the mechanisms available to address their grievances.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Lokanath Mohapatra, Director, Legal Services, and coordinated by Shashank Nande and Dr. Pragynya Parimita Ray, Faculty Coordinators, Legal Services Clinic. Amrita Bal, Assistant Legal Officer, extended her valuable support towards the successful organisation and conduct of the camp.

The initiative reflects KIIT School of Law's continued commitment to promoting legal literacy, strengthening access to justice for disadvantaged and marginalised communities, and advancing women's empowerment through meaningful community engagement. It also underscores the institution's emphasis on experiential legal education, enabling students to apply their academic knowledge to real-life social concerns while contributing to the creation of a more informed, inclusive and legally empowered society.
