In a remarkable medical intervention, doctors
at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, have
successfully removed a metallic nail lodged in the airway of a 10-year-old girl
from Koraput district, averting a potentially serious health complication.
The girl had accidentally inhaled the metallic
nail, which was part of a nail art instrument, two days before she was brought
to the hospital. Following a detailed medical examination and diagnostic scans,
doctors discovered that the foreign object was lodged in her right bronchus,
the airway passage connecting the windpipe to the right lung.
Considering the critical location of the
object, a team of specialists from the Departments of ENT and Anaesthesiology
performed the procedure using a specialised instrument known as a rigid
bronchoscope. The device enables doctors to examine the airways and safely
retrieve foreign objects that have accidentally entered the respiratory tract.
The procedure was conducted under general
anaesthesia, ensuring that the child remained asleep throughout the
intervention. The medical team successfully extracted the metallic nail without
any complications.
Following the procedure, the girl recovered
well and was shifted to the hospital ward for further observation.
The successful intervention highlights the expertise and coordinated efforts of KIMS specialists in managing complex airway emergencies, particularly in young children, where timely diagnosis and specialised medical intervention are crucial.
The team was led by Dr Manas Ranjan Rout and comprised Dr Satyanjaya Sahoo, Dr Sneha, Dr Manisha Mallick, Dr Sangram Keshari Das, Dr Supriya Kar and Dr Anjali Kumari.
