Doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have accomplished a remarkable medical feat by successfully performing a highly complex heart surgery that corrected five critical cardiac conditions in a single operation. The intricate and meticulously executed procedure involved a Bentall operation, mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair, and ASD closure — marking a significant milestone in the advancement of cardiac care in Odisha. The success underscores the institution’s state-of-the-art infrastructure, the proficiency of its distinguished physicians, and the coordinated expertise of its multidisciplinary medical team.

The operation, a first-of-its-kind in Odisha, was carried out at the KIMS Super Speciality Hospital by a team of highly experienced doctors, further reinforcing the hospital’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence for advanced cardiac interventions in eastern India.

The patient, a 32-year-old resident of the state, had been battling severe and progressively worsening heart disease for a prolonged period. Owing to limited access to advanced treatment facilities and financial constraints, he had been unable to undergo timely intervention. His condition deteriorated sharply last month, leaving him severely breathless, persistently fatigued, and unable to lie down for several days. He also experienced recurring chest pain and intense palpitations, significantly affecting his quality of life.

Despite approaching several government and private hospitals, the patient was repeatedly turned away as his condition was considered extremely complex and high-risk. He was eventually admitted to the KIMS Super Speciality Hospital, where he came under the care of noted cardiac surgeon Dr. Nimai Charan Behera. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations revealed that he was suffering from Marfan Syndrome, compounded by multiple life-threatening cardiac complications, including severe regurgitation in three heart valves and a dangerous aortic root aneurysm.

Recognising the urgency and complexity of the case, the medical team devised a carefully structured surgical plan to address all five defects in a single sitting. The high-risk procedure included a Bentall operation to replace the diseased aortic root and valve, mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair, and closure of an atrial septal defect (ASD). Anaesthesia administration and post-operative intensive care management were expertly handled by Dr. Anjan Kumar Das, ensuring seamless intraoperative stability and recovery support.

The surgery, which lasted approximately five hours, was completed successfully without complications. The patient was taken off ventilator support the very next day and demonstrated an encouraging and steady recovery. Within six days, he was discharged in stable condition. Post-operative assessments confirmed that his heart, repaired valves, and reconstructed aorta are functioning normally, enabling him to resume his routine daily activities.

Founder of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, congratulated the medical team for their exceptional accomplishment in managing such a complex case with precision and care. He also extended his best wishes to the young patient for a long, healthy, and fulfilling life, lauding the team’s dedication to delivering life-saving healthcare.
