In a remarkable
medical achievement, KIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully performed a complex Aortic
Valve Replacement (AVR) surgery on a 90-year-old patient from Kendrapara who
was considered an extremely high-risk candidate due to his advanced age and
severely compromised heart function. The successful outcome highlights the
growing capabilities of advanced cardiac care and offers renewed hope to
elderly patients facing life-threatening heart conditions.
The highly complex
procedure, performed by the cardiac surgery team led by Dr. Amit Agarwal, marks
a significant milestone for KIMS in its commitment to providing advanced
cardiac treatment to patients who are often deemed unsuitable for surgery due
to age and associated health risks.
Krushnachandra
Behera, the patient, was suffering from severe aortic stenosis — a critical
narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve — along with significant left ventricular
dysfunction. He had been experiencing progressive breathlessness, reduced
exercise tolerance and symptoms of heart failure, all of which had severely
impacted his quality of life and daily activities.
Doctors said the
combination of advanced age and poor heart function placed him in a very
high-risk category, with significantly elevated chances of surgical mortality
and postoperative complications. Performing open-heart valve replacement
surgery in a nonagenarian with a weakened heart is considered one of the most
challenging scenarios in cardiac surgery.
Despite these
formidable odds, the KIMS cardiac team successfully carried out the valve
replacement procedure. Following the surgery, the patient made a steady
recovery and is expected to experience improved heart function, significant
relief from symptoms and a substantially better quality of life.
According to the treating team, the successful outcome reflects the advances made in modern cardiac surgery, anaesthesia, critical care and multidisciplinary patient management, enabling highly complex procedures to be performed safely even in carefully selected elderly patients.
The successful surgery further demonstrates KIMS’ commitment to delivering advanced and accessible cardiac care. It also offers hope to elderly patients and their families who may otherwise believe that age alone rules out the possibility of life-saving surgical intervention.
