In a landmark achievement for Odisha’s healthcare sector and a moment of
immense pride for Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), cardiac surgeon Dr.
Satyajit Samal has received a major international recognition in the United
States, a development expected to significantly accelerate the institute’s
ambitious plans to launch advanced heart transplantation services. The
milestone could potentially position KIMS as the first hospital in eastern
India to successfully conduct heart transplants in the near future.
Dr. Samal, Consultant in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CTVS) at
KIMS, was conferred with the prestigious 2026 Mussallem Congenital Heart
Diseases (CHD) Alliance Travel Grant by the globally acclaimed American
Association for Thoracic Surgery Foundation during the 106th AATS Annual
Conference held in Chicago, USA, from May 1 to 5, 2026. The recognition not
only celebrates his outstanding contribution to the field of cardiothoracic
surgery, but also opens new avenues for international collaboration, advanced
mentorship and specialised training in heart transplantation for KIMS.
The American Association for Thoracic Surgery is widely regarded as the
world’s largest, most advanced and premier association in the field of
cardiothoracic surgery. Eminent surgeons and researchers from across the globe
were selected and honoured by the AATS Foundation for their exceptional
contributions to cardiothoracic surgery, innovation, research and academic
excellence.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Samal said it was a matter of immense pride
that KIMS, Bhubaneswar, had been officially recognised in the global AATS
database through his selection and participation in the prestigious conference.
During the event, he received mentorship in heart transplantation and other
advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures from some of the world’s leading
cardiac surgeons. He was also interviewed and offered opportunities for
advanced training in heart transplantation in the United States.
According to Dr. Samal, the exposure, global networking and
collaborations established through the AATS platform are expected to play a
transformative role in strengthening advanced cardiac care services at KIMS and
expediting preparations for launching a comprehensive heart transplant
programme at the institute.
Notably, Dr. Samal has become the first cardiothoracic surgeon from
Odisha to receive this prestigious recognition from the AATS Foundation,
bringing national and international acclaim to the state’s medical fraternity.
Founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS, Prof. Dr. Achyuta Samanta congratulated Dr. Samal on the remarkable achievement and stated that the honour further reinforces KIMS’ rapidly growing reputation for advanced healthcare, clinical excellence and specialised cardiac care.
Earlier this year, in February 2026, Dr. Samal was also selected and honoured by the AATS Foundation during IACTSCON 2026 under the Global Academic Exchange Program conducted jointly by AATS and the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons. The programme provided him with advanced exposure and specialised training opportunities at leading medical institutions in the United States under the guidance of eminent cardiac surgeons.
