The long-standing inter-state dispute
over the sharing of Mahanadi river waters between Odisha and Chhattisgarh moved
a step forward on Saturday as the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal heard
submissions from both states, focusing on detailed data related to monsoon and
non-monsoon river flows.
In compliance with the Tribunal's
earlier directive, both sides presented seasonal flow assessments, highlighting
variations in water availability across the year. The next hearing has been
scheduled for May 30, offering fresh hope for progress in one of eastern
India's most significant river disputes.
Odisha has consistently maintained that upstream dams and barrages constructed by Chhattisgarh have adversely affected the natural flow of the Mahanadi into downstream areas, particularly during the lean season. The state has expressed concern over declining water availability for irrigation, drinking water, and ecological sustainability, especially as several stretches of the river witness sharply reduced water levels during non-monsoon months.
While the matter remains before the Tribunal, Odisha has also favoured a negotiated settlement through dialogue. A high-level committee has already been formed to facilitate discussions between the two states, though field-level consultations are yet to begin.
