The Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS), under the
Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, has launched ‘Rangotsav-2026’ at
the SIRD campus in Unit-VIII, Bhubaneswar, marking a vibrant initiative that
combines eco-friendly Holi celebrations with women’s economic empowerment and
sustainable rural markets.
The festival aims to promote the use of natural colours while providing a
dedicated marketplace for Self-Help Group (SHG) women entrepreneurs. Visitors
can explore a wide range of rural products, including chemical-free herbal
gulal, traditional Odia delicacies, handcrafted artefacts and handmade
household items, reflecting the richness of Odisha’s village economy.
Welcoming the initiative, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking
Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik said, “Rangotsav is a beautiful convergence of
safe colours and women’s empowerment. By using natural colours prepared by SHG
women, we can protect the environment while supporting the rural economy.” He
urged citizens to adopt local products and celebrate Holi in a safe and
meaningful manner.
ORMAS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Priyadarshini highlighted that
the festival showcases the skills of rural women entrepreneurs and connects
them with modern urban markets. “Our primary goal is to link these women with
sustainable market opportunities and give their hard work a distinct identity.
Through improved packaging and branding, their products are being positioned in
mainstream markets,” she said.
One of the major attractions of the fair is herbal gulal prepared by SHG members with support from the RIPC in Ganjam district using natural ingredients such as turmeric, beetroot and flower extracts. These colours are completely free from chemicals and safe for both skin and the environment. The event also offers a direct marketing platform where rural women can sell their products to urban consumers without intermediaries, ensuring better income and visibility.
Rangotsav will continue till March 4 at the SIRD campus, inviting citizens to purchase natural Holi colours and traditional products while contributing to rural livelihoods. The initiative not only brings Odisha’s traditions to contemporary markets but also strengthens the journey of women towards financial self-reliance and sustainable entrepreneurship.
