In a significant step towards strengthening
healthcare infrastructure in northern Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi
on Monday inaugurated a state-of-the-art 650-bed teaching hospital at the
Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College in Baripada. Built at an estimated cost
of ₹258 crore, the modern healthcare facility
is set to transform medical services in Mayurbhanj district and neighbouring
regions, particularly benefiting tribal and underserved communities.
Addressing a large
gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the newly inaugurated
hospital would serve not only the residents of Mayurbhanj but also people from
adjoining districts, neighbouring states and remote tribal-dominated areas. He
expressed confidence that the medical college and teaching hospital would
emerge as a vital centre for quality healthcare, medical education, maternal
and child health services, public health research and awareness programmes
among tribal populations.
The inauguration
marked a major milestone in the State Government’s efforts to expand access to
advanced healthcare facilities across Odisha. The hospital is expected to
significantly reduce the burden on larger medical institutions while ensuring
specialised treatment closer to home for lakhs of people in northern Odisha.
During his visit to
Baripada, Majhi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a series of
development projects worth more than ₹430 crore aimed at accelerating the district’s overall
growth. According to official sources, investments amounting to ₹430.26 crore
have been allocated for 39 major projects covering key sectors
such as healthcare, transport, drinking water supply and public welfare
infrastructure.
Foundation stones
were laid for 21 projects valued at over ₹282 crore, while 18 completed projects worth more than
₹149 crore were inaugurated. In another major boost to public
utilities, the Chief Minister launched 83 drinking water projects constructed
at a cost of around ₹100
crore. These initiatives are expected to address long-standing drinking water
challenges and improve access to safe water in several
parts of the district.
Highlighting the
State’s healthcare reforms, Majhi said around 3.46 crore beneficiaries from
1.30 crore families in Odisha are receiving free treatment at empanelled
hospitals across the country under the Ayushman Bharat–Gopabandhu Jan Arogya
Yojana. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable and
accessible healthcare for every citizen.
The Chief Minister
also announced measures to strengthen AYUSH healthcare services in Odisha, stating
that new Ayurvedic colleges are being established in Gajapati, Malkangiri and
Rayagada districts, while new homeopathic colleges will come up in Nayagarh and
Nuapada.
Several ministers,
Members of Parliament, MLAs and senior district officials attended the
programme.
