Emphasising that
communication must be clear and easily understood, Press Information Bureau
(PIB) Additional Director General Akhil Kumar Mishra on Wednesday said that the
language of communication should always be simple to ensure better public
connect and meaningful outcomes.
Mishra, who also
serves as Additional Director General of PIB and the Central Bureau of
Communication, Bhubaneswar, was addressing a training programme for newly
appointed Sub-Divisional Information and Public Relations Officers of the
Odisha Information Service (OIS) at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication
(IIMC), Dhenkanal. He delivered a presentation on “Development Communication:
Changing Dimensions of Government Communication Systems.”
Interacting with the
officers, Mishra highlighted that communication does not end with dissemination
of information; understanding public feedback is equally crucial. “There is a
strong link between communication and development. Officials must assess how
people respond after receiving information,” he said, underlining the need for
a two-way communication approach.
He stressed the vital
role of effective communication in the day-to-day functioning of information
officers, particularly in taking government policies and initiatives to the
grassroots. He also cautioned that misinformation should not find space in
official communication, urging officers to verify facts thoroughly before
dissemination.
To reinforce the
importance of accuracy, Mishra guided participants through a group activity
demonstrating the difference between correct and incorrect information and its
impact on society.
The session also
featured audio-visual presentations on key government schemes such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Mishra
elaborated on how strategic communication plays a pivotal role in enhancing
awareness and effectiveness of such flagship initiatives.
The programme
provided a comprehensive platform for the officers to understand evolving
trends in government communication and the importance of clarity, accuracy, and
responsiveness in public engagement.
