With Dussehra celebrations set to light up Central Odisha, TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has rolled out a series of proactive safety measures and urged puja committees, shopkeepers, vendors and citizens to strictly adhere to electrical safety norms and opt for temporary legal electricity connections during the festive period.

As puja pandals, temporary shops and elaborate lighting arrangements come up across the region, TPCODL has advised organisers to obtain temporary electricity connections from the company’s Section, Sub-Division or Division offices. The power utility has cautioned against illegal hooking and unauthorised connections, warning that such practices can lead to electric shocks, short circuits, fires, transformer overloading and power disruptions.

The company has asked puja committees to engage licensed electricians for electrical installations at pandals and ensure proper wiring and adequate earthing. It has also recommended installation of 30 mA Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs) to provide protection against electric shocks. Organisers have been advised to use LED lighting, avoid overloading circuits and sockets, and rely only on standard-quality electrical equipment. Fire extinguishers should also be kept readily available at pandals as a precautionary measure.

TPCODL has further urged organisers to ensure that decorations, banners and flags are kept well away from overhead power lines and electrical installations. The use of metallic rods for carrying flags near electrical infrastructure should be avoided. Citizens have also been advised to maintain a safe distance from electricity poles, transformers and overhead lines, particularly during processions and idol immersions.

The power utility has cautioned against bursting firecrackers near transformers, substations and other electrical installations. It has also advised organisers and consumers to immediately replace damaged or exposed wires and regularly inspect electrical installations at pandals throughout the festive period.

TPCODL’s 24x7 customer care centre will remain available at 1912 / 1800 2027 to assist consumers with supply-related issues and emergencies.

“We are committed to ensuring safe and reliable power supply throughout the Dussehra festivities. We urge puja committees, shopkeepers and citizens to opt for legal electricity connections and strictly follow electrical safety guidelines. A little caution and collective responsibility can go a long way in preventing accidents and ensuring a safe and joyful celebration for everyone,” said Gajanan S. Kale, CEO, TPCODL.

TPCODL reiterated its commitment to maintaining safe and reliable power supply throughout the festive season and called upon citizens to celebrate responsibly by following prescribed electrical safety guidelines.
