NEW DELHI, JANUARY 29, 2026
In a
landmark move set to redefine the future of medical research in India, twenty
All India Institute of Medical Sciences institutions on Thursday signed a
Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Pan-India collaborative research
consortium, creating one of the country’s most comprehensive national health
research networks.
The
agreement was formalised during the Meeting of Directors of all AIIMS
institutions, facilitated by AIIMS New Delhi, and marks a decisive step towards
strengthening coordinated biomedical and clinical research aligned with India’s
national health priorities. By bringing the entire AIIMS ecosystem under a
single structured framework, the initiative aims to unlock the collective
potential of the country’s premier medical institutions.
Executed in
New Delhi, the MoU lays the foundation for sustained collaboration among AIIMS
institutions located at New Delhi, Bathinda, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bibinagar,
Bilaspur, Deoghar, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kalyani, Madurai,
Mangalagiri, Nagpur, Patna, Raebareli, Raipur, Rajkot and Rishikesh. Together,
these institutions will undertake joint research projects, multi-institutional
studies, clinical trials, researcher exchanges and systematic sharing of
knowledge and best practices.
The newly
formed consortium is envisioned as a national research backbone that will
leverage the vast clinical expertise, advanced infrastructure and diverse
patient base across the AIIMS network. By pooling resources and harmonising
research efforts, the initiative seeks to address critical health challenges of
national importance with greater scale, speed and scientific rigour.
Deliberations
during the meeting focused on identifying national research priorities,
strengthening multi-centric clinical trials and promoting cutting-edge research
in emerging domains. These include the application of artificial intelligence
in healthcare, development of affordable cancer therapies, prevention of
healthcare-associated infections and research on metabolic disorders that are
rising sharply across the country. To ensure seamless coordination, the
agreement provides for the nomination of nodal officers and single points of
contact in each participating institution.
Addressing
the gathering, Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, described the
consortium as a reflection of a shared national commitment. He said the
platform would help generate robust scientific evidence, promote innovation and
support informed decision-making in healthcare by harnessing the collective
strengths of AIIMS institutions across India.
Prof. Nikhil
Tandon, Dean (Research), AIIMS New Delhi, подчеркed that the Pan-India research
consortium offers a structured mechanism to undertake large, complex,
multi-institutional studies that are essential for tackling contemporary health
challenges. He noted that harmonised protocols, shared expertise and access to
diverse patient populations would significantly enhance research quality,
reproducibility and faster translation of evidence into clinical practice and
public health policy.
The signing
of the MoU and the formal launch of the consortium emerged as a major highlight
of AIIMS Research Day 2026, being held on January 29 and 30. The event is
providing a national platform to showcase institutional research priorities,
stimulate dialogue on emerging scientific challenges and reaffirm the pivotal
role of the AIIMS network in advancing evidence-based healthcare and policy in
India.
