Nippon Express Holdings, Inc. (NX Group) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to develop logistics infrastructure and strengthen supply chains for India’s growing semiconductor industry, the company said.

The memorandum was signed on September 9 and establishes a framework for closer cooperation between the two sides to address logistics challenges and support the development of infrastructure needed to build a robust semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

India is advancing its semiconductor ambitions under the government’s semiconductor policy, Semicon 2.0, which seeks to build an integrated industrial ecosystem spanning semiconductor design and manufacturing, equipment and materials, and advanced packaging.

With semiconductor-related cargo requiring specialised handling, including stringent vibration-control measures, the development of advanced logistics infrastructure has emerged as a critical requirement for the industry. Infrastructure conditions can also vary across regions, adding to the complexity of transporting precision semiconductor equipment and components.

NX Group considers India a key market as it pursues its long-term vision of becoming a logistics company with a strong presence in the global market. The Japanese logistics major has set a target of raising sales from its Indian operations to JPY 60 billion by fiscal 2028.

As part of its expansion in the country, NX Group plans to open a dedicated semiconductor logistics centre in the Dholera area of Gujarat in 2027. The facility is expected to strengthen the company's ability to support semiconductor-related supply chains as investments in India's electronics and chip manufacturing ecosystem gather pace.

ISM, an initiative overseen by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is a key government agency involved in developing infrastructure for India's semiconductor and display industries.

The latest agreement formalises a series of discussions between ISM and NX Group on logistics and warehouse infrastructure for the semiconductor sector. An ISM delegation had earlier visited the NX Group Building in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, as part of the engagement between the two sides.

Under the MOU, NX Group and ISM will share information and exchange views on challenges associated with transporting semiconductor-related cargo and developing logistics infrastructure. They will also explore appropriate areas of cooperation aimed at building logistics infrastructure capable of supporting India's semiconductor industry and creating more resilient supply chains.

NX Group said it would continue to leverage its global network and logistics expertise while working with customers and partners to build sustainable supply chains and address logistics-related challenges linked to India's industrial development.
