Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has achieved the significant milestone of receiving the ‘Single Use Plastic Free Unit’ certification for its Alumina Refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. Awarded by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in October 2025, this certification recognises Vedanta Lanjigarh’s successful efforts to eliminate single-use plastics from its operations under the CII Plastics-use Protocol.

This achievement is a testament to the refinery’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It sets a new benchmark for eco-friendly practices in India’s manufacturing sector. Over the past year, Vedanta Lanjigarh has fully implemented a ban on single-use plastics across both its operational areas and its residential township. The company has replaced these plastics with environmentally friendly alternatives such as biodegradable containers and cloth bags.

To drive a culture of sustainability, Vedanta Lanjigarh also conducted regular sensitization workshops and awareness campaigns, engaging over 1,100 employees and 1,500 business partners. As a direct result of these initiatives, the refinery has successfully reduced its plastic waste by 2,500 kg, reinforcing its commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint.

Vedanta Alumina Business CEO, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, expressed his views on this achievement, saying, “This recognition reinforces our belief that responsible operations and business excellence are inseparable. At Vedanta Lanjigarh, sustainability is deeply embedded in our growth strategy; every initiative we undertake is designed to create long-term value while safeguarding the environment. This achievement is proof of how disciplined execution and collective ownership can turn our sustainability commitments into meaningful, measurable outcomes.”

In line with its ongoing sustainability goals, Vedanta Lanjigarh continues to make significant strides in waste management, water conservation, biodiversity enhancement, and renewable energy integration. The company’s efforts are guided by Vedanta’s core philosophy of ‘Zero Harm, Zero Waste, Zero Discharge,’ ensuring that business growth is always aligned with ecological responsibility.
