In a major step toward safer and smarter highway travel, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an MoU with Reliance Jio to introduce a telecom-enabled safety alert system that will deliver real-time warnings to commuters across the national highway network. Leveraging Jio’s widespread 4G and 5G infrastructure, the system will send advance notifications to travellers as they approach accident-prone spots, stray-cattle zones, fog-hit stretches and emergency diversions.

The alerts, transmitted through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls, will enable commuters to adjust speed and driving patterns well in advance, significantly reducing the risk of collisions and mishaps. The solution will operate automatically for all Jio users travelling on or near highways and will not require any additional roadside hardware, allowing for rapid nationwide deployment. As part of its broader digital integration, the system will be synced in phases with NHAI’s ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application and its emergency helpline 1033.

Describing the collaboration as a transformative milestone in digital road safety, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said, “This initiative marks an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices well in advance. I am sure that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management on National Highway.”

Reliance Jio President Jyotindra Thacker noted that the project harnesses the power of Jio’s nationwide digital reach to deliver safety alerts at scale, contributing to a more informed and secure travel experience for millions.

The initial pilot will be rolled out across select NHAI regional offices to refine risk-zone mapping and alert parameters. Fully compliant with applicable regulations and data-protection norms, the initiative represents a future-ready model for digital highway safety. NHAI has also indicated plans to collaborate with other telecom providers to expand the system’s reach.
